Is it true Abraham Lincoln told the slave girl if you let me bang you i will start a war and free the slaves? is that why they weren't shipped back to africa. im doing a biography on the mistakes america makes | Horrible way to bring up this question - this piece of history.
Your question however prompted me to look it up on the internet (gee, imagine that! We can look stuff up ourselves! Andddd, you're doing a biography; shouldn't you be looking this info up for yourself??)
In any event, since I did read quite a bit on it, there is alot, alot, alot of conflicting stories. No where, though, did I read that they actually slept together. At best, they had a courtship yet she became engaged to someone else. She died only a couple of years later from Typhoid at age of 22. Some websites said they were only good, good friends, others say it's all speculation and still others say it was his first "love".
Now, maybe you ought to do some research yourself? I think it was rather interesting. Her name, by the way was Ann Rutledge | Why did white women beat their black girl slaves because their husbands slept with them? This is from the book I was reading for black history month: "Mastery, Tyranny and Desire: Thomas Thistlewood and his slaves in the Anglo-Jamaican World
"Thistlewood took full advantage of the sexual opportunities offered to white men. Living openly with slave or free mulatto concubines brought no social condemnation. White men were expected to have sex with black women, whether black women wanted sex or not. In his first year in the island—during which he slept with fifty-nine slave women on 155 occasions— "
"Thistlewood seems to have affection for Ellin [a young black girl from the Carribean] .... Thistlewood wrote extensively of Ellin in his diary. He seemed to pay attention to the most minute detail where she was concerned. He wrote of everything, from her toothache to her irregular monthly cycles.... After he "took" her, she would get up and go sleep somewhere else. In one of his entries, he declared that "She was rather too saucy." ..... in an effort to establish his dominance over her, he had sex with another slave woman in front of other slaves..... "
"Planters had wives, and these women would have severe animosity when such encounters occurred, whether willing or forced. The feelings of the planters’ wives contributed to their cruelty toward slave women. One would think that because of their gender similarities, the white woman would have some form of compassion and pity for the unfortunate slave woman. However, many whites during slavery in the Caribbean apparently did not consider slaves to be human. Domestic slave girls were the ones most often subjected to abuse by the white mistress in the home.
"... Blood gushed from the end of her [Ellin's] thumb where the white mistress had inserted a sewing needle ..... "
That is cruel and sick!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Thistlewood | First of all, we are talking about Jamaica and not Alabama, so this question does not refer to all white female slavers. Secondly, this is a case-study of a few families, or one family, that you mention.
In some areas of the Caribbean (like modern-day Haiti and Cuba) it was more acceptable for the master to have slave-women as mistresses then it was in the US American South. I am not saying that it didn't go on here, but it was less blatant, obvious and widespread.
A lot of it was due to religion and various sexual taboos that was for some reason stronger here than in the Caribbean.
Therefore, in the Caribbean, mistresses were a lot more in the wife's face, and more blatant competition for the husband's attention, than in the American South. The laws were also different, about how much privilege they could have, based on the hue of their skin. A light-skinned black slave in the states was simply classified as a *****, [see bottom] either free or slave, but in Cuba, she had more status and privilege then the darker-skinned counterparts.
I don't know the exact situation in Jamaica, and I am not a historian. But from what you told me, it sounds like this particular woman felt powerless, and took it out on her husband's girlfriend. That is a human reaction. She might have been a pale, flabby cabbage-faced British woman, and her husband's mistress might have been a physically-fit golden-skinned slave girl 10 years her junior. In her mind, the slave girl and her husband's relationship was ruining her life. You would be angry too, and be tempted to cruelty, in her situation.
But I would refrain from speculating too much, or making sweeping generalizations. People are complicated. So are their motivations.
EDIT: don't listen to some of these slavery-deniers. Slavery was real. It is a stain on our heritage, and renders the beginnings of our nation hypocritical. | Incident in the life of a slave girl? I have to write a paper and the question is a quote "Different expectations gave rise to different responsibilities, and these responsibilities, often defined the life chances of the female and male slaves." Basically how did different expectation of slave owners had between men and women vary? I dont know how to incorporate it with the book of the Incident in the life of a slave girl.
HELP? | well i guess they expect male slaves to be stronger than female slaves.
I assume female slaves would have been more into the household chores and raising families... | Are Girl Scouts slaves in cookie factories? I want to find out what chores a young slave girl ( a teenager ) would have had to do in ancient Greece for a story I'm planning . Thank you in advance . : ) | Like the Chinese and Muslim cultures women are not worth as much as men and many were allowed to die at birth while many families sold their own daughters into slavery. They would do everything a poor family would do; what was considered womens' chores kitchen, house cleaning, etc. Work the fields, grapes or whatever craft that might be included in the household. Sex would certainly be expected as it was males. Then off course the family would spend the next 5000 years blaming slavery, demanding reparations. Oh, wait they did not do that they forgot about it and worked at bettering themselves and making a moral life for themselves and family.
